Last weekend I accidentally met my old acquaintance “stud fisherman” on the shore, with whom we haven’t seen each other for a long time… While we were casting one and the same point, of course, we had time to talk a little about fishing and baits, and even almost managed to scatter in different directions, as suddenly he decided to ask me what is this tricky clasp tied to the cord. Even now I can’t remember what kind of carabiner was tied to the cord, but it doesn’t matter, because it was at that moment that the idea of today’s review was born. And the idea is that our people in the bulk are not spoiled and except for a couple of the most common and widespread clasps do not use anything else. And they are actually on the market is a huge number, and at a certain point, the choice of one or another model can greatly simplify life or even provide the correct game of bait. Therefore, in this article I will try to break stereotypes a little bit and tell more about those snaps that I use.
Decoy Round Snap
The most famous manufacturer of fishing accessories and no less famous carabiners, which have been produced for many years. They have a rather wide and rounded bottom part and can be used absolutely everywhere and with any bait. Their most important feature is that they are made of very thin spring wire and weigh practically nothing. Naturally, thin wire requires careful handling, and when changing the bait the main thing is not to overpress anything, but in the case when we need a minimum impact on the location of the bait in the water or its weight, they are simply irreplaceable. There is no need to be afraid of thin wire even when catching big fish – the lock design is quite reliable and adequately resists the jerks of my favorite stud, and he, as you know, is a fan of hitting the bait with all his might.

Unlike the previous carabiners, these snaps are made of thicker wire and are designed for lures that require jerk animation. Actually, that’s why they have such an unusual shape. This, of course, does not mean that they can not be used, for example, with the same crankbaits or something else, but it is this form of carabiner best resists shock loads and is able to work for a long time without deformation of the lock. Due to the narrow base, I do not recommend their use with oscillating trollers that do not have a crown ring, as they will almost completely restrain their game.

These snaps, in addition to their rounded shape, have another very important feature – one of the ends is directly welded to the body of the clasp and is unbreakable. According to the engineers’ idea it allowed to increase reliability and durability of these carabiners, but by chance I found out that in addition to everything else this type of clasp has shown itself very well when fishing in places with filament or other small algae. Due to the fact that there is no second lock, the “useful area” for their reeling, respectively, also reduced, and in such places they “pass” really better. And, of course, the rounded shape of the carabiner allows you to use it with all types of baits.

Most likely, this is the fastener I had tied at the moment of meeting with an acquaintance, because it is the one I use when fishing for spinning trollers. I think, it is not necessary to explain why in its design there is a double swivel, but why it is them, and not the usual “American” with a classic swivel, it is still worth explaining. The fact is that this design as a result is less bulky and, accordingly, is not so suspicious for fish, in addition, and various debris it also clings to itself not so actively. The design of the lock is realized by an elongated “ear”, which is located in a spiral around the axis of the carabiner. It looks as if it is not reliable, but in fact the independent “release” of the troller is simply excluded. A similar form of clasps is also available from Decoy (Spiral Snap), but they are made without a carabiner and are most likely designed for miniature lures and cases when the lure needs to be changed as quickly as possible.
Bassday Micro Snap
This is the most universal form of carabiners, which is produced by many companies and is so widespread in our country. And we must admit that it is quite deservedly loved, because in cases when we do not care about the weight or, for example, when in the cold is not up to “calf’s tenderness” and just need to change the bait, it really has no equal. The design of the lock is quite reliable, and the direct strength is provided by a rather thick wire. Besides, the shape of the bottom part allows you to use them absolutely everywhere and not only in spinning. So why do I use Bassday Micro Snap and not, for example, Owner Quick Snap? And the thing is that with this form they were my first carabiners after the Chinese from the market, and it’s just a matter of habit.
