What is nanofil?
Nanofil is a revolutionary invention by Berkley. It is a hybrid of a transparent monofilament fishing line and a strong braided cord. The strength is ensured by the production technology: polypropylene fibers “Dyneema” are subjected to heat treatment, as a result of which they are soldered together.
Nanofilament knots
The most important thing when equipping your tackle with nanofilament is to choose the right knot, because in case of its wrong selection, shooting and breakage are guaranteed.
The best choice is the knot recommended by the manufacturer: Nanofil Khot and Double Albright.
Pay attention to Double Albright. It is worth using the Double Albright, as the usual one comes loose.
There are still some knots that may be suitable for Nanofil. But it mostly depends on the diameter, for example, “Carrot”.
The main thing to remember is that when tightening the knot of the nanofilament should be moistened. Also, this case does not require haste. It is better to spend a little time and do everything carefully, than to be left without bait.
Pros of nanofilament
If you think that everything is bad and nanofilament should not be on your tackle, then you should read this chapter.
- The most important advantage of nanofilament is the range of the lure. If you compare it with braided cord, it is quite noticeable. To achieve such a distance with braided cord is simply impossible. This is due to the very smoothness, which prevents knotting.
- Also pluses nanofil are the properties of the fishing line – transparency and resistance to moisture absorption. Transparency is necessary for passive, cautious fish. And resistance to absorption is indispensable for winter spinning.
- It is worth paying attention to the price, which is important nowadays. Prices for nanofil approximately equal to quality fishing line, but much lower than good braided cords.
When and where to use nanofil?
You have not yet decided whether to buy nanofil? Let’s try to understand where and when it will be useful.
- First of all, nanofil is necessary if maximum throwing distance is important. For example, in situations when you know that the fish is far from the shore and the range of the cord is not enough to the cherished place. It is also worth noting that nanofil is more suitable for jigging than for tweeching.
- Secondly, the area of application of nanofil is winter spinning. We already know that nanofil is resistant to moisture absorption. Which is very important in such fishing, so as not to be interrupted by constant removal of ice.
- Also the use of nanofil is possible in feeder fishing for large white fish, when the use of braided cord is impossible, and the strength of conventional fishing line may not be enough.
“Fears and disadvantages of nanofilament
- The main fear of nanofil is abrasion. In contact with stones, algae, reeds, nanofil begins to lint, lose strength, and as a result it tears. It is always worth remembering that nanofil is very delicate and requires the utmost care in handling. For example, if you run your fingernail over the stretched nanofil, it is likely to tear.
- The next disadvantage of nanofil is that it is not durable. It is recommended to remove 1.5 – 3 meters of fishing line after each 2-3 fishing trips.
- Another disadvantage, if it can be called such, knots. Because of its structure nanofilu are not suitable for all.
Alternative to Berkley Nanofil
Perhaps you will be interested in the question, is there an alternative to the original nanofil? I can say with full confidence that there is no quality alternative at the moment. All possible analogs have their own shortcomings.

Just tried the Nanofil from Berkley and wow, it’s a game changer! Super thin yet super strong. My casting distance improved big time! Only downside? It’s a little slippery when tying knots, but once you get the hang of it, it rocks! Totally worth it for serious anglers!
Hey! I totally get you! I felt the same when I switched to Nanofil. It took a few tries to master the knots, but once I did, my accuracy really improved. That extra distance makes all the difference for targeting those tricky spots. Happy fishing!
