What is an ultralight

Image 1 : Ultralight spinning fishing. Part 1. Ultralight tackle

Ultralight or UL spinning rods are the lightest fishing rods available.

Ultralight fishing is a whole fishing religion with its own philosophy and many followers. For a long time, such fishing was inherent only to sportsmen, as the catches can not boast of large sizes, but enjoy the variety of nibbles and species composition of catches. I think there is no fish that could not be caught on UL.

Ultralight rod and rigging

As I have already written above, the lightest spinning rods are used in UL. If you designate the entire working test range, it is conditionally from 0.1 g to 7 g, of course 6-7 g with a stretch can be attributed to ultralight fishing, but some rods have such a weighting.

UL spinning rods are of all kinds: short and long, with a super-fast Extra Fast or slow Regular, classic rods under non-inertial reels and casting under multipliers, but all of them have one fundamental difference, which is in the different types of tops. Namely:

  • Solid tip
  • Tubular tip
  • HardSolid tip

Solid tip is a sensitive monolithic inlay made of fiberglass or low-modulus carbon. Such a tip visually conveys all the irregularities of the bottom and shows the most cautious nibs. This type of tip is mainly preferred by fans of micro jigging, because in addition to visualization solid allows you to smoothly animate the bait. As a result of its softness, the solid is not suitable for fishing on currents and at least some stubborn lures.

Tubular tip – classic hollow tip, less informative in the transmission of visual information than the Solid tip, but has the best qualities in terms of tactile sensitivity. The level of sensitivity is proportional to the cost of the rod due to the design features and type of materials used, so a quality microjig rod with this type of tip costs from 10-15 thousand. Tubular is considered to be the most universal tip. Such a rod can be fished both on the current and in standing water. There are also no restrictions on baits, the hollow tip perfectly copes with the animation of microjig and spaced jigs, with blades and wobblers, both crankbaits and minnows that require jerk animation.

HardSolid tip is a monolithictip, like the usual Solid, but the most rigid of the aforementionedtips and at the same time the most fragile, because it is made of high-modulus graphite. This tip has shown itself best of all in sea fishing – Rock Fish, where it is often necessary to conduct the bait by undermining and at the same time the tip should not fall through.

Reel

In ultralight spinning fishing use the minimum reel sizes from 500 to 2500 size. Since the thinnest cords and lines are used in such fishing, the selection of the reel should be approached very carefully. In addition to size and weight, an important factor is the quality of laying, because if the reel winds unevenly, it is easy to get a beard when casting. The thinner the fishing line or cord, the higher the requirements for the quality of winding. And, of course, do not forget about the friction. As a rule, the more expensive the reel, the softer and faster you can adjust the friction brake and prevent cord breakage at a powerful nibble.

According to the size of the reel can be conditionally correlated with the following rods:

Size 500-1000 works perfectly with spinning rods that have an upper test range of 1-1.5 gr – these are the minimum weights that practically do not load the mechanism, so you can take a lighter reel without fear of replacement at the end of the season. Most often these are microjig spinning reels.

Size 1000-2000 depending on the power of the reel is perfect for rods with test up to 3-3.5 gr. There are powerful reels in 1000 size, which perfectly cope with such loads, for example, Shimano Biomaster 1000S, there is even a load on the friction up to 5 kg, and there are reels like Stinger Innova Ultralight, which, despite the budget, have an excellent winding and perfectly cope with the thinnest fishing lines and braided cords, but in pursuit of a small weight have not very powerful mechanism, as a result, such a model in 2000 size is undesirable to use with heavier loads.

The 2000-2500 size is ideal for rods with an upper test range of even more than 7 gr. In such reels is already powerful enough mechanism and catching fish even a few kilograms will not cause harm, as well as the wiring of stubborn crankbaits against the current.

Braided cord and fishing line

Image 6 : Ultralight spinning fishing. Part 1. Ultralight tackle

I choose fishing line only in two cases. Firstly, it is microjigging, and even more likely mormyshing with the use of weights up to 0.8-1 gr, due to the greater stretchability of the fishing line relative to braided cord, which allows for a smoother animation of the bait. Secondly, it is catching brook trout, as the fish is very, very cautious, often reacts to any movement on the shore and can be frightened of braided cord because of the zero coefficient of transparency, the fishing line in this case wins.

In all other jigs braided and once again braided, in the case of microjig in the mandatory use of flurocarbon leash length of about half a meter. Since the thin braided easily rubbed on the shell and various underwater obstacles. In the case of crankbaits and trollers often use miniature carabiners with swivels to minimize the twisting of braided cord, which reduces its reliability.

I choose the size of ultralight cord not only according to the weight of the baits used, but also taking into account the possible size of the fish caught. When fishing for microjig used the thinnest cords, due to the small weights of sinkers to achieve acceptable throwing and quality animation, in addition to the microjig in 95 cases out of 100 catch fish of minimum size, so the best option will be braided in the size of 0.15-0.2 PE in the Japanese classification and the same size is suitable when catching brook trout. But if the used lures weighing more than 3 gr, it is better to stop your choice on the cord 0.3 PE, so that there was no shooting off the equipment when throwing. Also 0.3 PE should be used when fishing for crankbaits and spoons, if there is a possibility of catching chub from 0.5 kg or pike under a kilogram. I prefer Varivas, as with such sizes it is very important to match the declared size to the actual, series Area Super Trout Master Limited Super Premium or Light Game Super Premium.

The bottom line

No matter what kind of kit we’re putting together, whether we’re fishing for mormys up to 1g or big trout on trollers, whether we’re going to use fishing line or braided cord, the most important thing is thoughtful and careful selection to assemble a balanced kit. In ultralight, the balance of the tackle as a whole is the most important point, if observed, fishing will bring pleasure and a large number of nibbles.
