What feeder feeders are needed in the arsenal of an amateur of English bottomfish? This question we will try to deal with in this article. In fact, the choice of feeder – it is not a critical matter, ie, if you make a mistake – it will not entail anything, except its replacement with another. Nevertheless, a good angler must understand his gear, understand their purpose, so let’s learn!
Material of manufacture
Usually feeders for fishing are made of metal and plastic, what does this give us?
Metal feeder has both a number of advantages, compared to plastic, and a number of disadvantages. On the plus side, good aerodynamics can be emphasized, the feeder flies well into the distance and sinks quickly. In windy weather, it is preferable to catch metal feeders, they are good at breaking through the wind and do not float. On the downside – it does not float well. It is necessary to skillfully pump out the feeder after hooking to raise it above the bottom. Otherwise, the feeder can go parallel to the bottom and get stuck in the bars.
Plastic feeders have worse aerodynamics than metal ones, as well as sailing, so in a strong wind they are better to put them back in the box. But the incomparable advantage of plastic feeders is that they float well and lift the fish from the bottom, which facilitates the process of catching.
So, according to the material of manufacture feeder feeders are:
1. Metal
“+”: good aerodynamics; sinks quickly;
“-“: slowly floats
2. Plastic:
“+” float well, which can make the process of fishing out easier;
“-” lightweight, not suitable for windy weather.
Shape
By geometry, feeders are most often found in such shapes as square, oval, less often triangle and rectangle. As a rule, different shapes are needed for fishing in different conditions, such as standing water or current. And if in standing water is suitable for absolutely any shape, then on the current it is better to abandon the use of the oval, because it will roll. And resort to such shapes as triangle or square. And with a strong current it is worth using a rectangle, because it has a flattened shape and a small area for the side wall, on which there is pressure from the current. In extreme rivers, rectangular-shaped feeders with metal spacers, the so-called “grounder”, are used.
For heavy conditions, when it is necessary to make a long throw or break the wind, anglers have invented bullet feeders with good aerodynamics and high accuracy, which fly well to ultra-long distances even through the wind. Needless to say, bullet feeders must be made of metal. There is a practice of making bullet feeders out of plastic, but in my opinion, they cannot be put next to metal ones.
Feed yield
In terms of feed efficiency, feeders come in a net, and it does not matter if the netting is metal or plastic.
Closed feeders come with a small number of holes for fishing on rivers, and under the live component, such as the opener and method feeders.
- Feeder cage comes in both metal and plastic version, its main feature is a basket with frequent holes. In it, water enters immediately after docking and contributes to the rapid exit of feed from the feeder. Such feeders are recommended to use on water bodies with standing and weak current.
- Closed feeders with sparse openings are designed for fishing in currents, as well as at great depths, when the main task is to deliver the feed to the bottom. It protects the feed from being washed out quickly.
- Closed feeders under the live component – specific feeders, more often ovals, in which the top and bottom are closed, there are small holes so that the opryshchis or other animals are selected from it independently. Such feeders are most often used to catch carp on paid ponds and lakes.
- Method feeders are feeders made in the form of a spoon, on which a special mold is pressed finely dispersed feed, where the bait and hook are hidden. These feeders are not directly related to the feeder, so I will not focus on them.
Feeder sizes
Feeders are usually divided into small, medium and large.
- Large feeders are called “zakormochnyh”, because they are not really good for anything else, as to set the table for fish. Some anglers catch them on a permanent basis, but it is largely a matter of taste.
- Medium feeders, aka standard feeders – the usual typical feeders, which are most often used for fishing. They are quite feed-consuming, fly well, float well.
- Small ones, so-called “thimbles”, are needed when it is necessary either not to overfeed the fish, or we are fishing at shallow depths and we can not make noise.
Feeder color
According to sportsmen, it is important that the feeder does not scare the fish away. Usually manufacturers make feeders of khaki color or with black coating, and this is normal. Fish are not afraid of such colors, another thing is that although rare, but there are feeders made of metal without powder paint, they shine with chrome. I try to avoid such feeders. Although, perhaps, this is prejudice, but, nevertheless, natural dark colors are preferable.
Today on the market a large number of feeders, both from British companies and domestic, not to mention homemade. All of them are applicable and the main factor in choosing one or another feeder becomes the price. Imported feeders are quite expensive. But, for example, closed-type feeders for the live component no one makes, except the British. Plastic feeders are now made by several companies in Russia, so their prices are very reasonable. And metal cages are made by many craftsmen themselves, so they can be purchased for humane money. The usual number of feeders at a keen angler is about 200 pieces. If it seems to you that this is a lot, believe me, it is not so, start catching and practice will put everything in its place.
Conclusione
Let’s list some ideas expressed by the author of the article:
- The plus side of metal feeders is range. Best of all pierce the wind models that resemble a bullet in geometry.
- Plastic feeders are not very convenient in windy weather. But they float faster, which will help when fishing.
- On the current it is more convenient to use square or triangular shapes, on extreme, turbulent rivers can help models with grundozatsepami.
- The more holes in the net and the wider they are, the faster the feed mixture is washed out.
- Large feeders are usually used for baiting. And the catch itself occurs most often on medium feeders.
- Shades are better to choose natural, dark.

I love feeders! Last summer, I set up a bird feeder at my place. It was amazing to see all the different birds visiting. We had finches, cardinals, and even a couple of squirrels trying to sneak some seeds! They’re such fun to watch and help nature thrive.
