I can’t imagine how anyone could dislike winter fishing. Many anglers think it is cold, but I can assure you that it is much warmer than fishing in late fall from a boat. In winter, you can always warm up by walking a hundred or two meters or making another few holes for yourself. Also in winter you can catch almost all the same fish that we catch in open water, both predatory and peaceful. And there are a lot of ways of catching, it is not difficult to find the most interesting one. I have tried to catch different fish, but most of all I like to hunt for perch. Methods of catching it is a large number, but in this article I want to talk about my practice of catching striped robber on the mormyshka, because it is this method delivers the maximum amount of emotion and adrenaline, because when on a thin fishing line sits a good humpback, it’s really a whole battle! Immediately I want to note that I am not a fan of using nozzles in winter. Let sometimes they work better, but in this article I will describe my experience of catching just on the mothless.

Choice of place

Most often, I hunt for perch in various herrings and bays that connect to the river. Closed reservoirs do not like at all, because in my region perch is considered a weed fish, and in the period of his active pecking, he is caught in huge quantities, not even letting go of the young. Eventually the fish become very scarce, and it becomes almost impossible to catch them in a large area until the population starts to recover at least a little. In open reservoirs, however, there are not only local perch, but also those coming in from the river, so their numbers are much higher.

In winter, perch often stick to the same places where they are caught in the fall. According to my observations, if you find a place where large perch go out in the fall to feed, especially gregarious, it is almost 100% likely that he will come to feed there in winter. In flowing old men it can be various fences without current, which in summer overgrow burdock or chinch, some navels and braids, spots of coquina, that is, such places where there is something to hide perch. Or where is looking for food minnows, which and dainty “striped”. Large perch can be present and at greater depths, about 4-6 meters, but systematically catch it from this depth on the mormyshka very uncomfortable.

Some of the places described above can be searched not only by open water, but also by satellite images. Now it is very easy to see spits and shoals or thickets of burdock, which in winter sinks to the bottom, mark them for yourself on the map in your phone or enter the coordinates in your navigator and get in place accurately enough. In any case, you will not have to drill thousands of holes to find the coveted spit, and you can do it quickly enough.

This item will probably be the smallest. You need to choose a fishing rod only on the basis of personal feelings. Someone needs a balalaika, and someone with a handle is more comfortable option. Some people like the smallest and thinnest homemade fishing rod at all, made of a wine cork and a whip. Therefore, you need to go to the store and try to hold everything in your hands. On the fishing line I would not save, because in such thin diameters, and for catching perch on the mormyshka I do not advise to put the fishing line thicker than 0.10 mm, you need good stretchability and not bad breaking load. That’s why I do not use fluorocarbon, because it does not stretch as well as ordinary monofilament and knots it holds worse.

Nod is also difficult to advise, except that to each mormyshka (by weight) need to select its own nod, but its length is already determined by the fisherman by experience. Personally, I prefer shorter nods, they are convenient for me to set fast vibrations, but there is no recipe suitable for everyone, so it is better to take several options and check which one will suit you better!

There is a huge number of mormyshki. Depending on the number of hooks – one, two or three – they are called “mormyshka”, “goat” or “devil” respectively. As with all baits, with mormyshki need to experiment. With yourself it is always better to have at least three collected rods with three different in size and color mormyshki, additionally have a few more options for change.

Fishing practice

My favorite fishing tactic is an active search. On the reservoir there are always fish that want to feed, the only question is how many of them and where they stand. Sometimes you get to the whole packs, and sometimes you have to drill holes for a couple of hours until you get to a single perch that is ready to eat our bait.

Also perch in winter often feed on outcrops. If you have in mind a place where there is definitely a perch, but he is not catching now, then on such a point you can periodically return and check whether the striped has not come, or in general all day to wait for his output. I do not like this tactic at all, but sometimes it brings the best results.

In addition to searching for the fish itself, it is necessary to constantly try to change mormyshki and their feeding. On one hole I linger for five-seven leads and can change one bait, and then move to the next hole. The question of wiring is interesting, because at different times perch prefer different wiring of mormyshka. Of course, the most classic is high-frequency oscillations of small amplitude without pauses. Perhaps this wiring works for perch in most cases, but if he is capricious, you can try to feed the mormyshlka “by the roach” with a large amplitude and low frequency of oscillation. In this case, in the middle of the wiring can sometimes make a small, up to one second, pause, which is simply a failure of the game, which can provoke the perch to attack.
