There are a lot of articles on the Internet about what is twitching. But who can tell about the fishing technique better than someone who practices it? Working on the material, we turned to a man who catches wobblers even in winter. Below are the basic principles of jerk fishing with comments of Ivan Kashitsin, Spinningline expert.
Term
The word twitching means “twitching” in translation. Hence the understanding that twitching is animation with the help of different intensity of jerks.
Abroad there were many terms, for example, jerking and twitching. In the classical understanding, the first style of animation is more sharp and aggressive. And the second is more soft, smooth. However, in Russia, jerking is often associated with the wiring of jerks – a certain type of bait. And under twitching is understood absolutely any jerk.
Constituents of success
The ingredients of success are the right gear and skill. The skill is developed during practice. Let’s talk about how to make the right choice to go to it in full force.
I. Fishing rod
Experienced fishermen have more than one spinning rod for twitching in their arsenal. And the main thing for a beginner is not to make a mistake in choosing at least one, the first one.
* Advice No. 1, which you will meet in any article: the rod should be rigid and short.
Ivan:
I would say so, the spinning rod should not be long. The reason is convenience when performing even the most complex animation and throwing. It is logical that it is not always convenient to perform precise and controlled movements with a rod that is too long. Therefore, the length of 1.8 to 2.3 meters can be considered optimal. Although this is not an axiom. The choice of length can be influenced by certain conditions and, of course, personal preferences. There are always exceptions.
So it is also with stiffness. It is logical to choose a blank that corresponds to the style of wiring. Hard spinning – hard style. However, it is difficult for a beginner to immediately understand how it will be more convenient and interesting to animate baits. Therefore, I would recommend blanks with medium stiffness. And of course, do not forget about the correspondence of the test and the weight of baits.
Personally, I do not like to “beat wobblers”, I make them play correctly. Therefore, depending on the situation, for example, I can choose fast or exstra-fast, with a softened tip, although the classic structure for twitching is considered to be Regular-fast.
* Tip #2. Pay attention to the sapidity of spinning for twitching. It is necessary for long distance throws.
Ivan:
In my opinion, this is not the main factor, and long distance throwing is not always needed. After all, at too great a distance you can lose control over the bait. By and large, 40-50 meters is more than enough. Of course, in twitch you have to throw wobblers – that is, voluminous, and therefore sailing baits. However, modern rods almost all have decent characteristics for throwing. But in general, it is better to give preference to a spinning rod, the line (geometry of the bend of the blank under load) which is medium-fast.
* Tip #3: Light weight and spaced handle to avoid hand fatigue when wiring (animation is performed by the rod).
Ivan:
Light weight of the blank is always a “+”. And whether the handle is spaced or not is just a matter of preference. Attention should be paid to its length, which should be conditionally short. The handle should not interfere with the animation.
II. Reel
In twitching use both inertia and multiplier coils. The main requirements – even winding of fishing line and power reserve.
Ivan: For non-inertial reels, I would say not winding, but good laying. Some models can lay the line visually evenly, but the loops still fly off. I had an experience.
Regarding the power reserve. There is an opinion that tweech fishing very quickly “kills” reels. I would disagree. Proper animation is performed by the rod. The fishing line is rewound during a pause in the conduction. So the statement about the increased load on the reel is greatly exaggerated. But, in any case, the reel should correspond to the power class of the tackle.
III. Line or cord?
For twitching wires can be used fluorocarbon or braided. The first is applicable in multiplier tackle. Braid in our country is the most common, due to its low extensibility, respectively, the ability to maximize control over the conductivity of the bait.
Ivan: In general, the fishing line has a very strong influence on the behavior of the wobbler. An interesting fact. Most Japanese wobblers are designed for use with fluorocarbon fishing line. Fluor has a negative buoyancy, which greatly affects the horizon of wiring. In addition, such a fishing line can stretch. To compensate for its extensibility, in a large majority of cases in Japan and are used hard spinning.
In our country, however, widespread braided cord. Its minimal stretchability allows you to quickly transfer the impulse to the bait. Therefore, I would use for twitch hard spinning rods more thoughtfully.

Twitching is a game-changer for catching fish! I remember the first time I used it; I hooked a massive trout that day. It’s all about the right tackle—light and sensitive gear works wonders. Trust me, once you try twitching, you’ll be hooked!
