What can be simpler and at the same time more important than a feeder in bottom fishing? Let’s remember an old saying: “You feed, you catch”. You can’t bait fish with balls from your hand, as in float fishing. Feeder feeder is a way to deliver bait to the fishing point. The catching point can be far away, deep, with or without a strong current. You have to catch fish in the bottom layer or in the thickness. For this reason, one feeder, which is called “for all occasions”, can not do. From the correct choice of this element of equipment depends not only on the harmony of the whole tackle, but also its final result – the catch.
Classification of feeders
The purpose of all feeders is the same – it is the delivery of bait and its components to the catching point. Why then such a variety of shapes, types, materials and colors? The answer to the question is obvious, because in specific fishing conditions feeders are used differently. Even the same weight feeders can work differently and perform different tasks. Let’s consider these questions in more detail.
1. In the classification of feeders, the first thing we want to distinguish feeders zakormochnyh and working. The role of the first – to feed the selected fishing point for a minimum time. They are distinguished from the working feeders by their volume.
The working feeder replaces the priming feeder in the process of fishing, when the main “table” is covered and you can go directly to the fishing itself, maintaining the density of bait. During fishing, the bait feeder can be used more than once and not twice. But again, everything is based on specific circumstances. It happens that the fish reacts negatively to the delivery of bait in large volumes.
2. Feeders river and ordinary. It is necessary to pay attention to their shape and design. For fishing on the current, depth river feeders have a large weight, rectangular shape, closed body or basket with a fine mesh (mesh). Not infrequently such feeders are equipped with ground hooks.
3. Feeders for fishing in the water column (in the tier) and for working on the bottom. If you are fishing for coho or other fish in the tier, you can use open feeders. If it is necessary to feed “in the bottom” – use closed feeders.
4. It is necessary to single out feeders for difficult weather conditions (headwind or side wind, long distances). These are feeders with displaced load. All kinds of bullets, wells, cups, nozzles. The advantages of such feeders are their flight qualities. There are those that at once break through the wind and fly under the shore. Ordinary “plastic” or “metal” will not fly like that!
Intentionally in this publication I do not classify feeders by material of manufacture – plastic or metal. Here it is a matter of choice for each angler. Someone likes one more, someone else another. For information I will add the following. It is generally believed that the metal feeder flies further and more accurately, and floats better than plastic. But this is all subjective. I met both plastic bullet feeders, which flew badly and floated very hard, and metal feeders, which had these indicators were excellent.
Choosing the weight of the feeder according to the fishing conditions
It is one thing to catch bream, and quite another to catch coho. Accordingly, and the approach to fishing should be different. More precisely, the choice of feeder weight should be different. If we catch bream in a strong current, the bait should work near the bottom. In this case, the choice is better to make in favor of rectangular feeders weighing 90-120 grams. Perhaps, you will need more weight. When catching chekhoni, the bait should not work at the bottom, our task is to catch fish in the water column (in the tier).
For such fishing, you can choose a feeder weighing 80-90 grams. It will be a little more drift, but we need just such an effect.
Catching at great depths also makes certain adjustments. When catching bream you need to bring the feeder to the bottom as quickly as possible, without loss of bait in the tier, and when fishing in the tier it is important to slow down the fall of the feeder. Of course, the bait itself should also have different physical properties.
Fishing at shallow depths with large feeders will not bring success. To reduce the noise from the fall of the feeder, it is preferable to choose feeders from 7 to 60 grams.
Condições de pesca | Atual | Profundidade | Shallow |
Working in the tier | 80-90 | 40-50 | 7-20 |
Work near the bottom | 90-120 | 70-90 | 20-60 |
Selecting the type of feeder according to the fishing conditions
The choice of feeder type is also of great importance. Closed feeders or fine mesh feeders are preferable when fishing in currents or deep water. This is especially important if there are a lot of non-target fish in the longline. For example, bleak or small roach. Our task is to minimize losses of bait in the tier and keep the attractive state of the bait before the equipment falls to the bottom.
Feeders with ground hooks have recently become popular when fishing on currents. This form of feeder allows in some cases to reduce the weight of the feeder, better holds on the bottom and resists the current. However, by themselves grouper hooks on the feeders will not save. It is necessary to use the correct diameter line and choose a different position of the rod after throwing to minimize the influence of the current on the line and the feeder drift.
When fishing at a long distance, with a strong side or headwind, the correct choice is a hive feeder or another feeder with an offset load (glass, well). Depending on the target fish, the net cage of such a feeder can be large or small.
Condições de pesca | Current and (or) depth | Shallow | Distance |
Work of bait in the tier | Open ovals, large cage | Large cage | Bullet, large cage |
Work of bait near the bottom | Closed, with or without hooks | Closed, small cage | Bullet, small cage |
So how many feeders are needed for feeder fishing?
At first you will need a lot of them. Hooks and shootings will do their job. For this reason, you should immediately set yourself up for the fact that the feeder is an expendable material. With practice, everything will become good, seasonal losses of feeders will be minimal.
Having chosen the priority directions for yourself in fishing, you can begin to form an “alarming” suitcase with feeders. For amateur fishing, three or four walking weights and sizes will be quite enough. Of course, it is necessary to have a small reserve.
Let’s count together. In my box for fishing on the current are feeders of three weights: 80, 90 and 100 grams. Three of each. In addition to the rectangular feeders, there are 100 gram feeders with groundbaits. Usually two or three of each. And a few heavy 100 gram bullets. Total no more than 15 pieces. Of course, there is a large stock at home. In case of breakage after fishing, I immediately restore the number of feeders in the box.
And what is in the box for fishing on a body of water without current? Feeders weighing 50-90 in increments of 10 grams. Also with a triple reserve. Separately feeders – bullets 40 and 60 grams in two or three pieces. No more than 20 pieces turns out. Feeders small feed capacity and feeders weighing less than 20 grams on amateur fishing do not use.
After such systematization on fishing reduces the number of equipment options. How it used to be? And let me try to put such a feeder, and now let me take another one. From the constant selection of feeders, the situation did not always become better. In addition, the fishing bag has become lighter.
Systematization and storage of feeders
Agree, it is very important to have order in gear, equipment, consumables. If everything is laid out in its place, the gathering for fishing is very fast and qualitatively.
Going to the river to catch bream? We take a box or a crate with heavy river feeders. Going to the pond for crucian carp – here is a box with feeders for fishing on ponds.
- Box Three Keith 0046-2
- Box Mottomo MB8479
- Box Pathfinder LUNO-20
- Salmo Allround box
This is how I have systematized feeders and organized their storage. For this purpose EVA containers or plastic boxes are very convenient. The choice on the fishing market is great, you need to pick the right height of the box so that the lid closes tightly.

I totally get the struggle with feeders! I started with just a couple, but ended up needing a whole box. It’s wild how much gear we accumulate! Organizing them by weight and type made my life so much easier on fishing trips. Can’t wait for the next adventure!
