In the first part of my narrative, dedicated to the fishing of stud, I mainly touched on the spring period and the beginning of summer. This concerned the places where he stands and the baits he most often prefers during this period.
In the second part, we will talk about the rest of the season, including the second half of summer and fall almost to the ice. Since the ban on the use of boats in our country by this time has already been lifted, then in addition to fishing from the shore here is added and raft fishing, which is no less productive and interesting than the survey of the classic places of his camps and hunting.

When fishing from the shore in summer, I divide the main points into two completely different types. The first is catching in the standard places, which include rolls, sand spits and breakaway streams after any obstacle. Literally until mid-autumn, fishing here is mainly tied to morning and evening twilight (the so-called wolf time – an hour before dawn and an hour after sunset). It is during them that the stud is the most active and the least cautious. Naturally, during the day he also makes “forays” to the roll, but these “outings” are not so long and less productive.
The second type of places – is a variety of hiding places, in which he waits for the daytime gaping fish or vice versa itinerates along them, bursting in to eat unsuspecting prey. Most often it is a rubble piles of driftwood at the main stream washed up bank or areas behind various coastal anomalies, in which the current is usually weaker. Moreover, the survey of such places is possible not only from the shore, but also during the rafting on the boat. In my case, the second option is even more preferable, because mostly on the Dnieper such areas are located under the precipitous bank, and you can’t go there. Another significant difference from the classic points is that the stud here is not tied to time, so nibbles can be at any time of the day.
As for the second half of the fall, then the stud continues to be caught both on rolls and in snags, but more and more often it can be seen on extensive sand spits, where various young whitefish gather before wintering. With further cooling sheresper gradually begins to gravitate to the holes, and on the way to them makes stops in places with a reverse current near the main stream. This is clearly visible by the fact, for example, that today in the “reverse” is caught mostly small stud, and after a couple of days there are caught quite worthy specimens.
Momeală
On the subject of what baits work best on the stud, you can write more than one dissertation, as even when catching on the same river, but in different places preferences of this cunning fish will be completely different.
For me, the main factor in choosing the type of baits is the place where the fishing is directly conducted. During rafting along the rubble, most often it will be small-sized crankbaits or oscillating and rotating blades, as these baits allow you to start wiring almost immediately after docking and do not require any special animation in a limited space.
Here are a couple of favorites from this category:
When fishing on rolls and breakaway streams it will be, as in spring, mainly sinking minnows, sticks or on the contrary surface baits in the form of volkers:
In the case of catching on sand spits the main lures for me will be various rattlins or heavy and compact blades. This is due to the fact that the fishing is conducted in clear water and at shallow depths, and the stud does not always let up to a close distance, allowing you to use light lures. These same lures (plus blades, which have a vertical component of the game) will be useful in late fall, when the fishing is closer to the bottom and the usual minnow do not “reach” to the desired horizon.
The most favorites in this category:
Regarding the choice of colors for this or that bait, I try to start from the contrast with the bottom and transparency of the water in the place of catching or simply guided by the principle – what I like, that is most often in the water and, accordingly, most often and catches.
Echipament de pescuit
In case of fishing with small baits I use light spinning rods like Major Craft Troutino Stream 692ML or SLrods Atria II 702L. This is due to the fact that due to the complex structure they more or less allow to work with lures from the lower limit of their test, and in case of a big fish bite there is some power reserve due to a more powerful rim. Most often this feature helps when fishing in the snag, when you need to prevent the gerich to go into the rubble and have to force the whole process of catching.
Naturally, when fishing for heavy blades or rattlesnakes they are not suitable. We have to use a second set of gear with a more suitable test. In my case, it is usually “ounce” like Norstream Spiker 2 822MMH or CD Rods Blue Rapid 8’3 “M. This type quite allows you to work with such lures even on fast wires when fishing on streamers, and “jig” pedigree will come in handy during vertical wires in late fall.
I don’t have any special requirements for reels. All as usual – clearly working friction, good cord laying and size, suitable for the spinning that I use at the moment. Otherwise, all modern reels cope more or less the same way, as there are no such heavy loads as in jig fishing, when fishing for studs.
The choice of this or that cord is more conditioned by your salary, I have recently settled on eight-core cords from the middle-price segment like Seaguar PE X8 Lure Edition.
Cablare
There is no single and universal recipe in the case of studs. Since depending on his mood, even in the case of the same bait, the reaction will be completely different. Today, for example, he will react to a simple “even”, and tomorrow or even after a couple of hours, he does not want to leave the shelter and reacts only if you give the troller crumble right in front of him. The same applies to surface baits – today he wants super high speeds, and in the evening we will only react if you dilute the wiring pauses.
Therefore, it is always worth experimenting and do not dwell on one thing. The only thing is that the stud in my latitudes is quite partial to acceleration during wiring. This moment often helps when he follows the bait and does not dare to attack it. On the basis of this love I have built and some wiring rattlinov – when in the beginning I let the bait lie on the bottom, and then sharply tear it from the place.
In the case of krenki arsenal of wiring in many ways overlaps with the catching of chub – the same classic wiring “on the drift”, “upstream” or “loop”. In a snag, it can be the usual “even” without any tricks, due to the fact that we are limited in space and there is no opportunity to diversify it somehow.
Epilogue
In conclusion, I want to add that when catching studs from the shore, you should also not neglect some camouflage. On this subject, of course, a lot of copies have been broken, but at least elementary measures should not be neglected.
Otherwise, zherekh – it is the same fish as perch or pike, only with slightly different habits and at times more capricious. Therefore, even if at the beginning you are constantly haunted by failures, you should not give up and should continue to go to your goal. Since sooner or later you will still pick up the “key”, and this beautiful and strong fish will not once please you with its unforgettable bite.

I remember binge-watching Gillies during the last chilly season. The character arcs and plot twists kept me hooked! It’s wild how a show can totally reflect our ups and downs. Can’t wait to see how they wrap it all up in the next part!
