Vobler s čepelou

Almost a hundred years have passed since the invention of the first wobbler. Over the centuries, its form has undergone a huge number of changes, giving rise to various classes of artificial baits: minnow, crank, shead, fat, popper, crawler, wolker, rattlin, flat… The list can go on, but given that almost every year new classes of wobblers stand out from the existing ones, let’s put a dotted line. In this article, we will talk about sheads.

Origin

Its name wobblers of the class of shead owe to the American fish shad. The word “shad” comes from the consonant Old English “sceadd”, which means “herring”. And this name is not accidental. American shad inhabit the waters of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, and for spawning comes into the rivers of North America, rising up to 600 kilometers upstream. Females are very prolific and lay up to 30,000 eggs. Young shad stay in rivers until fall. Numerous fry, ranging in size from 4 to 12 cm, resemble their parents in shape and are the fundamental food base for most North American predatory fish. By the way, a black dot near the head or a series of dots on the body of many wobblers also appeared for greater resemblance to shad.

Shad class wobblers, like their living prototype, have a flattened from the sides, oblong, “high” body. It would seem that everything is simple, but the range of fishing lures is so wide that it is often difficult to unambiguously attribute the wobbler to any one class. The fact is that the sheads have signs of both wobblers class minnow, and crankbaits. In part, this “mixing” is explained by the bet on the realism of the bait, and nature to drive into narrow frames is not always possible. Therefore, do not be surprised if one angler will call a wobbler a shead, and another krenkom or “minnow”. Even manufacturers of baits are often confused in the classification, making unnecessary confusion. Usually do more simple. And on the website in the column “form of bait” write several values, such as “shad, crank” or “shad, minnow”.

Image 2 : Kosadaka Rat DD

Sometimes the “transitional” form is motivated by the purpose of the lure. So the Rat DD series from Kosadaka is designed for deep-sea fishing, including trolling. For such wobblers it is important to have its own game even on a simple uniform, as well as on the current. Therefore, Rat DD is made more voluminous and has the features of a krenk. In addition, like a krenk, it will not “work” on jerk wires.

In general, the body of the sheads is always higher, and the sides – flattened. Such a form visually looks more, resembles a fattened fish. It is believed that such prey seems to predators more nourishing and appetizing. However, the catchability of the bait depends not only on the appearance. You need to choose the right option for specific conditions.

Behavior of the bait and wiring

Image 3 : Shead Wobbler. Pike fishing

Since the sheads have the characteristics of both crankbaits and minnows, they inherit behavioral features from both classes.

1. Unlike minnow wobblers, sheads have a sprawling, pronounced own game with oscillations of high or medium frequency. Thanks to this, they are much more successful in catching bass or chub on the even wiring. Usually sheads are used when fishing for chub, when the water gets colder than 17-18 C.

2. Comparison with crankbaits. Most of the sheads, kaki krenki, well hold the stream on the current. Unlike crankbaits, sheads are effective not only at even wiring or stop-and-go, but also at twitching. At a jerk wobbler wiggles its whole body and takes a position close to vertical. This is caused by the specific shape of the body – the center of gravity is shifted close to the head.

If you hold the wobbler near the bottom, it gives the impression of a feeding fish. This behavior is characteristic of the feeding objects of pike and pike, for which jerk wiring with pauses is the most effective.

The main characteristics of the sheads

1. type of buoyancy.

There are three main degrees of buoyancy.

  • Floating (floating) during wiring are submerged, and at the pause rush up. This property is useful when you need to cover overgrown areas, maneuver over snags or bottom debris.
  • Sinking (sinking) sheads, on the contrary, during the pause sink to the bottom, when wiring them can be “pulled” up. When the wobbler sinks, it resembles a sick fish. And such a weakened prey seems easy for all predators. However, fishing with such lures rationally window of clear water.
  • Suspenders (suspending) can hang on a given horizon. Sheds with neutral buoyancy can be used on slowed, sluggish fish. When the wobbler is long traveling along a given horizon, even satiated predator will decide to attack.

2. Depth.

A specific model of the pole is designed for a certain level of depth. We can
distinguish the following designations of the degree of depth:

  • SSR, SR and XS – designed for fishing the upper layer. Letter
S in this case is an abbreviation of shallow – shallow.
  • M(medium)R or XL – will help to explore medium depths.
  • D(deep)R, DD or XD – deep and bottom layers.

The designations of the degree of depth are conditional. The exact figure depends on the series and the size of the model. For example, wobblers of medium size Kosadaka Mirage XS are immersed at 1.5 – 2 meters. And for ultralight series Yoshi Onyx Frisky Shad 47F-DR solid depth is already 0.8 – 1.3 m.

3. noise effects and a system of long-range throwing.

To ensure that the lure is not lost in murky water or was able to lure the predator out of an ambush, inside some shads hidden noise chamber. Aerodynamic characteristics of the wobbler are improved with the help of the long throwing system. In addition, the flight distance can be influenced by the geometry of the body, the ratio of length and mass.

What fish are caught on the sheads?

Due to the peculiarity of the shape of the body, shead class wobblers are excellent for catching a wide variety of predators and in a variety of conditions. Versatility makes the shead wobblers excellent search baits.

  • For fishing for capricious trout and other salmon will be suitable stable on the current models with their own game. For example, Lucky John Anira 39 mm long.
  • You can hunt for pike, large perch or stud with a wobbler Shadow Rap Shad from the brand Rapala. In the water, this slowly surfacing shad is indistinguishable from a wounded fish. The toothy predator, which keeps at a depth of up to 2 meters, can be caught with a deep-water Diving Flap Slap from Megabass.
  • For sudok you can use Hardcore Shad F965 from Yo-Zuri/Duel or OSP High Cut. With such wobblers you can catch from the boat with the method on the track.

Záver

So, to summarize.

Shed is a wobbler with a high body, flattened from the sides, which imitates a well-fed fish. As a rule, the lure has its own game. Suitable for the classic even, and for twitching animation. Inside the body of the pole can hide an acoustic (noise) camera, as well as a system of movable weights for long distance throws. The degree of buoyancy, size and level of depth are selected from the expected conditions and the desired prey.

Wow, I had a shead wobbler last summer when my buddy and I tried to set it up ourselves! It was leaning all over the place. We were cracking up as we fixed it up and finally got it stable. Best DIY project ever! Can’t wait for the next one!

I remember my mate’s old shed that wobbled every time the wind picked up. We thought of fixing it, but it became a challenge to see how long it could stand. It ended up being a funny story to tell at BBQs! Good times!
