Let’s make it clear right away. We are talking about monofilament fishing line, which can be considered a “classic”. And braided cords, fluorocarbon floaters use much less often. In practice, the choice of fishing line is an eternal search for a compromise between the minimum allowable thickness and maximum strength. Why?
Often beginners at first are attracted to a thicker fishing line for float fishing rod. There is logic in this. Such monofilament is stronger. It will not break if caught on the grass. It will withstand the pulling of burrowing fish. And we all dream of pulling a real trophy on the shore. With a monofilament with a larger diameter is easier to knit montages, if there are problems with vision. However, the thicker the thread, the more noticeable it is. And the more it scares away fish, especially on forbidden reservoirs. It has been established that even one hundredth of a millimeter can affect the catch dramatically. In fact, diameters from 0.06 to 0.25 mm can be used. The range is large.
What monofilament fishing line is better to choose for a float rod?
First, separately select the main fishing line and for the leash. In the second case, the criteria will be more stringent, since this part of the snap will be in almost direct contact with potential prey.
Secondly, the concept of “float rods” is broad. Different requirements are imposed on fly tackle, bollocks, match and plug rods.
Third, the fish. The size matters. Below are approximate recommendations in the table.
Fourth, conditions.
- In pressed reservoirs, with a passive bite capricious fish will be scared off by exceeding the diameter of even 1 hundredth of a millimeter. Of course, if you do not mind hunting for the eternally hungry rotan, the question is not particularly fundamental. However, for a delicate crucian carp or roach such a factor can be decisive.
- The presence of dense vegetation, when fishing goes near the shore, will require an increase in diameter, otherwise there is a high probability of breaking the tackle.
- In windy weather, it is rational to use sinking lines. Then the wind will not blow the tackle in an arc, which prevents quick hooks.
- The need for camouflage. Fishing lines can be colored in dark shades, such as green, brown, black – this will make them less noticeable against the background of the bottom and vegetation. Transparent are good for clear water. There is a monofil with a coating of fluorocarbon, which refracts light in the water at such an angle that the tackle becomes almost invisible to fish.
Fifth, stretchability.
Monofil can stretch from 5 to 20% on average. Stiffer fishing lines are good on currents and for fast hooking. When hunting for burrowing fish, such as carp, a more elastic fishing line is suitable, which will help to compensate for jerks.
It is worth mentioning in this point. Some fishermen combine different fishing lines for the leash and the main tackle to compensate for the lack of extensibility and vice versa.
Tip: for float fishing, choose the average value. Such lines will be less tangled, but at the same time in the water column the bait will go more dynamically than with a very elastic thread.
Sixth, softness. Too stiff fishing line can have the so-called “memory” effect. Then it will twist into a spiral, spring. This is especially critical when fishing with delicate jigs.
And the final point – unwinding. It can be considered optional, since the criterion is far from the main one. For leashes fishing lines can be produced in not very large unwinding from 30 to 50 m. For the main it is more convenient to choose options from 100 – 150 m. This point is worth paying attention to when fishing at a distance of more than 50 m on match or bologna tackle. The larger the unwinding in this case – the more convenient. If a break occurs, you can simply tie the tackle and continue fishing without rewinding the reel.
Choosing a monofilament line for the leash
As already mentioned, here the requirements will be the most stringent. For this part of the equipment, high-tech (and therefore more expensive) fishing lines are used. They are made of high-quality polymers. They are distinguished by resistance to abrasion, have a small diameter with greater strength. Ideally, measure the diameter of the thread before use to make sure it is calibrated. The permissible gap for quality fishing line in this case will be no more than 0,01 mm.
To begin with, let’s determine the type of fishing rod:
- Stecker. The most delicate tackle. Allows you to use the thinnest diameters from 0.05 mm.
- Fly tackle is considered quite coarse. Therefore, the fishing line thinner than 0.07 mm is better not to use. There is a high probability of breakage. Optimally choose a fishing line of about 0.1 mm.
- Bologna rod – the golden mean. In this case, you can use a softer monofil, so that a light float can be thrown farther away.
- Match tackle. Preferably sinking fishing lines, colored in a dark shade. Why? In this case, you can make marks with a white marker to better control the distance at which the catching takes place. This will be important precisely when throwing long distance. For this type of fishing is important and the type of mounting: sliding or blind. In the first case, a thicker and, if possible, stiffer fishing line is taken to avoid overlaps.
Тип вудилища | Stick | fly rod | Bologna | Матч |
Line diameter (mm) | from 0.05 | 0.08 to 0.12 (sometimes more) | from 0.12 to 0.16 | Fixed rigging – from 0.16 to 0.18 |
Sliding – from 0.18 to 0.22 |
What line is suitable for crucian carp and other fish?
Once again, we remind you, we are talking about leashes. The values in the table below are primarily advisory in nature. There are many tips and some may even contradict each other. For example, the most common peaceful fish in the middle zone is crucian carp. Therefore, the question “what fishing line for him is better” is actively discussed. There is an opinion that when it comes to hunting in the shallows, in the upper layers, it will be enough monofilament up to 0.14 mm, and when fishing the bottom – up to 0.18 mm. However, it is often asserted that the thickness of the thread maximum in any case should not exceed 0.14 -0.16 mm. Therefore, in the table – averaged values.
Carp | Carp | Carp | Redfin, silver salmon, bream | |
Line (mm) | 0,14 -0,16 | Delicate fishing: 0,05 – 0,08 (plug); Other types of fishing rods:: 0,06 – 0,1 | Active: 0.14 -0.28 Passive, cold water: Plug + rubber – 0.9 – 0.12 Max – not thinner than 0.12 | 0,1 – 0,12 |
