Mormyshka is a purely Russian invention, similar in principle of action to a trollop, only of a smaller size.
It is also worth considering why the mormyshka was named this way? This name is similar to the often used winter bait, mormysh or, as it is also called – bormysh. It is a freshwater crustacean bokoplavy perfectly proved itself as a bait of animal origin.
To date, there are two types of mormyshka:
1. a classic mormyshka with the use of an attachment (live, vegetable, artificial).
2.mormyshka, not requiring the use of any bait – the so-called”mothless”.
Classic mormyshka
Catching on this type of mormyshka is passive, similar to catching a summer rod. On the hook of the mormyshka is planted bait, and the fisherman waits for a nibble. This type of fishing is suitable for more passive and peaceful fish. In form, classic mormyshki almost identical with mothless. Their main difference is the absence of fixed bait – beads.
Mothless mormykka
Suitable for fans of active fishing. Bezmotylka is a favorite bait for perch, zander, pike and other predatory fish. Variations of execution of mothless baits there is a huge number. Their main difference from the classic mormyshka is the attachment of a bead on the hook, which creates a game, moving on the hook.
Shapes of mormyshki
1. Ferris – a mormyshka in the form of a drop equipped with a tee;
2. Uralka – elongated, slightly curved, to the end of the narrowed mormyshlka, equipped with a single hook. In the water is located at an angle of 45 degrees;
3. Goat – similar to the Uralka, but has a wider body and single hook replaced by a double;
4. Ant – in shape resembles, which is logical ant, equipped with a single hook;
5. Banana – just as in the situation with the ant, this mormyshka in shape resembles a banana;
6. Clove – a mothless moth with a non-standard approach. On its hook is located, as a rule, a brass ball, which when playing strikes the mormyshka, thereby attracting fish sound;
7. A pellet is a ball-shaped mormyshka with a single hook;
8. Cat’s eye – a new type of mormyshka. In its shape resembles a mormysh, the main object of the fish food base;
9. Drop – in its shape, which is strange, resembles a drop. Equipped with a single hook.
What are mormyshki made of?
1. Lead. Due to the low price of mormyshki from this material are the most popular. Also have a smooth game, which can not fail to please capricious fish.
2. Tungsten. The main difference between this material and lead is that with the same size mormyshki have the heaviest weight. This comes in handy for fishing at great depths and currents.
3. tin – the lightest mormyshki for catching small fish at shallow depths in standing water.
4. Silver – a very rare metal in the manufacture of mormyshki, but still such exist. The main advantage is the color.
5. Various types of plastic – have the lightest weight.
Size of the muzzle
The size of the muzzle is directly proportional to the size of the desired prey. Large fish will rarely pay attention to a small mormyshka. And small fish will be frightened by a big mormyshka. Also in choosing the size of the mormyshka should take into account such a criterion as the activity of fish. In one situation, small perch can greedily rush to the mormyshka, prepared for a large bream. In another, the same large bream will avoid this mormyshka.
Weight of mormyshlki
Fishing depth, m | Weight of muzzle, g |
2-3 | 0.2-0.3 |
3-5 | 0.4-1 |
5-10 | 1-2 |
10+ | 3+ |
Do not forget to take into account the current. If there is a current, increase the weight of the muzzle.
- A light muzzle provides a more delicate game;
- on the first and last ice it is preferable to use large pellets.
Choice of fishing line depending on the weight of the muzzle:
Weight of the muzzle, g | Line diameter, mm |
Up to 0.2 | Up to 0.8 |
0.3-0.5 | 0.1-0.12 |
0.6-0.9 | 0.15 |
1-1.5 | 0.18 |
1.6-2 | 0.2 |
2-4 | 0.23-0.3 |
Color of muzzleloader
The main problem of the angler is the choice of color. In mormyshka fishing as well as in other types of winter fishing or summer fishing. there are no definite working colors, there are some recommendations:
- For night fishing, phosphorescent mormys of various colors are suitable;
- When fishing in deep water, copper and phosphorescent muzzles should be preferred;
- The silver and red body of the mormyshka serves as a reference point for fish in search of prey;
- For catching perch it is worth giving preference to brown, brass, dark green color mormyshki;
- When fishing at a depth of more than 10 meters, the color of the mormyshka does not matter;
- It is also worth paying attention to the amount of snow on the ice. The more it is, the lighter the color of the mormyshlka should be;
- Black mussels are more effective in spring.
Storing mormyshki
To store mormyshki should use a flat plastic box with inserts made of polyurethane foam or cork. Many anglers unknowingly take foam rubber, which is not suitable for storing mormyshki. The fact is that foam rubber is a very hygroscopic material. That is why mormyshki fixed in it, can quickly come into disrepair. Also do not forget to remove the remains of animal or vegetable baits, which will easily make the hook rust and thus bring it into disrepair.
A little about fishing tackle for mormyshka
- For fishing on a mothless mormylka it is worth using a”balalaika”. It can create a more delicate game than an ordinary fishing rod;
- Do not be negligent about the choice of rigidity of the nod, if it is incorrectly selected, you risk not seeing a nibble at all;
- If you plan to catch big fish, then pay attention to the strength and quality of the rod;
- You can also tie a regular hook 20-30 cm above the mormyshka and get a pleasant bonus in the form of a nibble “duplet”.

Last winter, I tried using mormyshki for ice fishing. I was skeptical at first, but when I got a nice haul, I was hooked! It’s amazing how effective those little jigs can be. Definitely going to stock up for this season!
