All kinds of traveling with spinning set certain requirements for rods and their compactness. It is not always possible to go on every trip with your favorite single-part or even with a two-part spinning rod. Different types of vehicles, and sometimes the conditions of hiking lead us to the search and choice of compact types of rods that can be packed in a bag or even a backpack, and at the same time without problems and breakages to deliver them to the places of cherished fishing, to which to get far and sometimes long.
Even today among the equipment of some mature taiga fishermen can be found one of the oldest types of spinning tackle class travel – “Banku”. This unpretentious tackle is probably the most compact version of spinning, in which in fact the rod itself is absent. Just on the oblong tin can wound a section of monofilament with a leash and bling at the end. In its assembled form, the bling (more often oscillating) is removed inside the can and plugged can any bag (for fish), placed in another bag, stored in the pocket of the backpack.
This set weighs nothing, at most a hundred grams, and takes up very little space. But in case of an opportunity to fish on some taiga river, you can quickly put this improvised spinning into action – pull out a trolling rod and, holding the can in one hand, the other hand to launch the trolling rod into the river. Flying off the can as from the bobbin of a non-inertial reel, the fishing line after the bobbin rushes into the distance, of course, for 10-15 meters, and more and do not need in such places. Since the winding is carried out by hand on the bank, the sensitivity of such a tackle is very high, even the most cautious bite will not miss. I have seen more modern versions of this tackle, from a scrap of plastic wide pipe and with braided cord instead of monofilament, in them the sensitivity is even higher.
Telescope or plug trevel?
But all this is too utilitarian and more suitable for hunters or other extreme travelers, who just occasionally want to get a couple of kharyuzkov to a modest dinner in a hunting hut. We, spinningists, need to get pleasure from the process of fishing, including aesthetic. And since it is not always possible to bring or bring our favorite gear to the hell on the hedges, that’s where we are looking for options from spinning class travel and telescope.
Telescopic spinning is often more budget-friendly in relation to travels with a plug connection of the knees, although among telescopes there are very expensive models, especially in the trout direction. Occasionally you can meet hybrid models of rods, in which usually the first knee is folded as in a telescope, retracting inside the handle, and the rest are connected by a plug method. Of those telescopic rods that I tried, I particularly remember the River Hanter Tele model from Black Hole. The spinning rod turned out to be so successful at a very small price that it accompanied me for several seasons in my taiga trips to unexplored wild places. Together with the attached reel it traveled quite well on me in my backpack, sometimes even in the company of other rods with a different test and length. In general, the choice of a telescopic spinning rod is quite a reasonable decision for a small amount of money.

The telescope still loses to plug trevally, and it’s not at all about the quality of high-modulus graphite. It’s just that the device itself with a sliding connection of many elbows prevents the formation of a monolithic blank in the assembled form, the elbows are still prone to rotate and can suddenly let you down at the most inopportune moment, which is fraught with the breakage of the rod and the failure of fish. And we didn’t travel, fly, swim thousands of versts or pass a dozen or two kilometers through taiga wilds, hills or mountains to spoil everything for ourselves in such a way, having saved some money on buying not quite suitable fishing rod. So I, like many other spinning-travelers, went all the way in search of the most suitable for hiking purposes rods and stopped all the same on the plug spinnings type travel.

Cases and tubes
Since my preferences in spinning fishing are quite diverse, I can’t get away with one or even a couple of rods. And the situation is the same when it comes to camping spinning rods. So I have tried and tried in my long fishing life a lot of different variants of rods for different conditions, including travel rods of all colors. Different species of fish and different conditions of their catching make their own adjustments when choosing the right rods in terms of test, structure and length. And when it is necessary to choose a compact folding variant, the task becomes even more complicated. In addition, the choice of trevel in addition to its characteristics, includes a choice between different brands, but that’s not all. An important moment is the transportation of the rod, and its integrity depends on how extreme it will be for him, so our choice sometimes depends on the case or tube, which manufacturers complete their rods.
Sometimes we have to make a choice in favor of the trevel whose tube is stronger, besides it can be useful in the future for transportation of other trevels, which are not equipped with such, but only packed in modest cases. For example, my SSOCHI-N M4 664L from JS Company is equipped with a simply gorgeous metal tube made of aluminum alloy, with a sealed cover on the thread. In such a tube the rod is practically safe, neither when falling on the rocks, nor when falling into the water. In addition, light bright coloring will not let such a tube will not get lost, even if it falls out of the boat when forcing some rapids, it will be easy to find it on the water, like a brightly colored float.
Sometimes you have to make a choice in favor of the traveler whose tube is stronger
However, if the fishing trip does not promise some extreme delivery to the place on a mountainous rapids river, through the taiga on an all-terrain vehicle, motorcycle or ATV, it will be quite enough to have a hard case-coffer or a simple plastic tube covered with fabric. In such packages the rod will quite reliably and safely get in your travel bag or on the side of a backpack to fishing spots, whether it is a trip/flight on some transport, rafting on a calm river or hiking. But having only a simple cover made of some fabric or neoprene is not the best option, and you will realize it sooner or later when you damage the rings or break the rod’s knee during transportation. It is better to get a hard case or tube, if you don’t buy a suitable one, then at least skolkhozhivayusya it yourself from a piece of fan pipe, for example.
In such packages the rod will safely reach your travel bag.
Reasonable compactness
In your desire to get a very compact spinning rod should not bring everything to the absurd. The fact is that the market of such rods is not so narrow and it is full of variants, which in folded form can be placed even in a jacket pocket, like some PROX rods. But how much this is justified from a practical point of view is for you to decide for yourself. With all due respect to any opinion, I have seen from my personal experience that super-compact travel rods with more than four or five sections are already starting to lose to their less dismembered brethren. This is expressed in the time spent on their assembly and disassembly, in more careful control of all their joints during fishing, in more weight due to the greater number of joints, in weak sensory. But they can be transported even in a pocket or in the glove compartment of the car, that is, keep them handy almost always, even on the way to work or in a hunter’s backpack just in case. This is their main plus, and therefore such rods also have the right to life and keep the demand for them at quite a high level.
But three-four, maximum five-piece trekking rods are the most popular due to a reasonable combination of their compactness and working characteristics. From three-part rods I have already several seasons regularly work Nixx Pop Inshore 703ML from JS Company, four-part rods in general a few, and five-part one – Fish Season Piligrim, it is really the most compact my travel, and serves most often as a spare rod.
Three-four-piece travel rods are popular because of their reasonable combination of compactness and features
The most popular segment of travel rods
No matter how you look at it, four-piece travel rods make up the main backbone of hiking rods and not only in my arsenal. They are really the most popular type of trevally. There are no special secrets here, just a four-part blank in most cases allows to get the necessary compactness for any transportation in combination with ease of use and good sensorics. That’s why I have more such rods at my disposal than other travel rods. From them the most budgetary – SMUGGLER MTRSS21L from Maximus and Bidaia 704ML from Sakura, and the most expensive – SSOCHI S664L and SSOCHI-N M4 664L from JS Company.
The four-part blank allows you to get the necessary compactness
There are other trevelles in my arsenal, but some of them are no longer produced or are not available for sale.
In general, what I wanted to convey to the reader in this opus is, first of all, that such type of rods as trevally is very much in demand in spinning for various reasons. And the rods of this type are not just abby as dismembered variants of some standard models, but thoroughly worked out spinning rods, by their properties practically not inferior in anything to their two-part brethren.

Travelogues are like a best buddy guide for trips! I remember using one to navigate through NY. It had cool tips about hidden spots. Wish I had a telescope too; it would’ve been awesome to stargaze from the rooftop! Definitely makes traveling more fun and memorable!
Absolutely! Travelogues really add that personal touch. I had a similar experience in Paris; they led me to a quaint café away from the tourist spots. A telescope would’ve taken stargazing to the next level for sure! It’s all about those unique moments that make the journey special!
